First Contemporary Mosaic Show Opens in LA Area
JUNE 27 – AUGUST 5, 2009
Reception Meet the Artists – Live music and refreshments
Saturday, JULY 11th – 7 to 9 PM
The call to artists received 122 entries, of which 51 pieces were selected for the exhibition. (Click to see Dawn’s Flickr Set) See list of artists below.
It was a blind judging, so the judge had no preconceived notions about the work or artists. Lillian said, “The work felt very fresh and there was such a variety of media and skill levels presented. As I considered each piece, I continually returned to the bigger picture. I sent grouping ideas and curation notes to the gallery because I saw strong themes emerging. They did a great job mounting the work.”
The Gallery offers Cash Prizes chosen by the Juror, which will be announced at the Artist’s Reception on July 11th. The cash awards are $500-1st, $300-2nd, $200-3rd and the Eye-Opener Award is $100 plus a statue.
To round out the introduction to mosaics as a hands-on experience, a selection of workshops will be offered throughout the run of the show. (June 27 – August 5). Sizemore’s World Mosaic Armchair Travel Tour presentation last Saturday evening brought in about 30 mosaic travelers. Additionally, she will teach a “Mosaics from the Mind’s Eye Mandala” class, Dawn Mendelson will offer a Pique Assiette course, and together, Dawn, Luz and Lillian will facilitate a bi-lingual English/Spanish community mural workshop and the panels will be donated to the gallery for their beautiful garden area. The mural workshop is free and a festive unveiling party is planned August 5th from 3-6 PM
Registration for the classes is made directly through the 2CC website or at the gallery.
The Gallery is thrilled to bring a new audience to 2CC. Upon seeing the work Cheryl Bennett, the gallery director said “I am completely excited. This is going to be BETTER than great show. Utterly FANTASTIC!!!! “
